Wis. company recalls sliced apples sold in Minn.

A Wisconsin company is recalling sliced apples because they may pose a health risk.

Richland Hills says nearly 50,000 pounds of apples may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

So far there are no reports of illnesses, but the bacteria can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. It can also be very dangerous for pregnant women. In healthy individuals the bacteria can cause fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea.

The company found the bacteria through a sampling program is uses to ensure food safety. The company, along with the FDA, is investigating to determine what caused the problem.

The recalled apples were sold in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and Louisiana through retail stores, food service and fast food outlets.

There are three categories of apples included in the recall.

1. Packages
Labeled: Richland Hills Apple Dippers 4 oz, Richland Hills Organic Sliced Apples 6 oz, Crunch Pak Organic Slices Apples 6 oz, and Richland Hills Apple Nibblers 2 oz
Use by dates: 1/26/09, 1/27/09, 1/28/09, 1/29/09, 1/30/09

2. Fruit trays
Pearson Foods fruit trays with apples in 6.5 oz, 12 oz, 24 oz, 36 oz and 48 oz packages
Sell by dates: 1/19/09 or before.

3. Sliced, diced, quartered and half apple packs in cartons
Labeled: Richland Hills in 2 oz, 2.4 oz, 3 oz, 2 lb and 10 lb packs
Use by dates: 1/26/09, 1/27/09, 1/28/09, 1/29/09, 1/30/09

Anyone who bought the recalled apples can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
